Reef Check

Coral reefs are under threat worldwide, including the Red Sea. We, as divers, can help make a difference by learning more about tropical coral reefs and collecting valuable data to establish the state of coral reefs. The data recorded are sent to the Reef Check headquarters where it will be included in their annual reports. The Easter Reef Check and Christmas Reef Check includes a 3-day EcoDiver certification course trained by marine biologists. You will learn to identify indicator species and in the globally standardised Reef Check protocol.

Dates: See below at the RSEC Calendar of Events

Easter Reef Check / X-Mas Reef Check

2-weeks Reef Check Expedition with EcoDiver Training

940 € including double room coachhouse (+70 € single room supp), 20 dives, airport shuttles, 1 boat trip.

(Optional 600 € for 1 week with 10 dives, +35 € single room supp)

Student package:
800 € (2 weeks), 530 € (1 week)

Dahab Reef Monitoring

In cooperation with REEF CHECK Europe we initiated a reef monitoring programme with approval from the National Parks’ authority (Nature Conservation Sector / Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency).

This reef monitoring programme is based on an extension of the standard Reef Check procedure. The aim of the extended Protocol is to provide more well defined data describing the status of coral reef health with respect to anthropogenic and natural impacts.

Dates: See below at the RSEC Calendar of Events

The Dahab Reef Monitoring Project needs a team of at least 4 volunteers for adequate implementation. A minimum certification of Advanced Open Water brevets or equivalent from renowned diving associations (e.g. CMAS, SSI, PADI) is recommended as well as the minimum number of 25 logged dives.

(We offer Open Water Diver courses and training dives for uncertified divers.)

To participate best is to meet following requirements:

  • You should be an advanced student in biology
  • or Divemaster or dive instructor well familiarized with reef biology
  • Having participated in Reef Check surveys earlier
  • certified as Reef Check EcoDiver is required*

*For all participants a Reef Check EcoDiver Training will be held at the beginning of the project (first week) .

4 weeks package (students/volunteers):

accommodation, 30 project dives, training, airport shuttles and 1 boat trip 1.000 €

2 weeks package (non-student):

accommodation (coachhouse double room), 20 dives, training, airport shuttles and 1 boat trip 960 €

*Prices are excluding diving equipment!

You can rent full dive equipment (except dive computer) for 6 € (volunteers) or 8 € per dive at Sinai Divers.

Coral Project Dahab

You will learn to collect data underwater using different survey techniques, analyse and interpret the data. The project will run for three weeks, during which presentations, training, fieldwork in the following topics will deal with:

  • Coral bleaching (monitoring, coral watch, survey techniques)
  • Coral diseases (id techniques, built up a local catalogue)
  • Coral diversity (scleractinian coral groups, id techniques)
  • Coral damages (anthropogenic threats, natural coral feeders and damage)

Dates: See below at the RSEC Calendar of Events

Biodiversity and Biogeography of Red Sea Scleractinians

Generally most scleractinian species show a certain variation, environmental and regional, which made the identification quite difficult. Veron (2000) ascribes to this fact the certainty with which a local taxonomist is able to identify a particular coral species decreases gradually with distance from the region he works. The difficulty of assessing the extent of hybridisation between coral species and the influence of a possible reticulate evolution (hypothesis) are further obstacles to coral identification. The references regarding distribution and species number for the Red Sea in the literature (Sheppard & Sheppard 1991, Wallace 1999, Veron 2000) differ to some extent, especially in the genus Acropora. Wallace (1999) gives 43 species compared to 52 of Veron (2000). Veron (2000) excludes 5 of the species given by Wallace (1999) from the Red Sea and in addition assesses 6 more as uncertain. In return he gives species unidentified by Wallace (1999) Acropora anthocercis). In addition, 15 species are stated as uncertain for the Red Sea by Veron (2000).

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or similar) with at least 25 dives, students of marine science or related field are desireable but not restricted to. Knowledge of marine biology is an advantage.

We offer Open Water Diver courses and training dives for uncertified divers.

A minimum number of 4 volunteers is required.

3 weeks package (students):

accommodation, 25 project dives, training, 1 boat trip and airport shuttles 850* €

2 weeks package (non-students):

accommodation in double room (hotel), 20 dives, training, 1 boat trip and airport shuttles 960* €

Masbat Bay Conservation

You will learn to collect data underwater using different survey techniques, analyse and interpret the data. The project will run for four weeks, during which presentations, training, fieldwork (and laboratory work) in the following topics will be given:

  • Coral reefs (importance, threats, survey techniques)
  • Seagrass beds (importance, threats, field techniques, lab)
  • Sandy areas (importance, threats, field techniques, lab)

After each topic a small report should be written (in groups). Other small group projects will also be carried out (e.g. environmental awareness for locals and tourists, underwater clean-ups, beach clean-ups, habitat mapping of the bay and habitat rehabilitation). All you have to learn will be taught in the training during the first days. The training inlcudes as well a buyoance training for all divers.

Dates: See below at the RSEC Calendar of Events

Habitat rehabilitation and artificial reefs using natural resources as a first step to conserve habitat diversity and increase attractiveness of Masbat Bay for tourism.

Dahab is a popular destination for snorkelers, divers and surfers. The Masbat Bay, which is the main bay in Dahab, is used for these types of water sports, and is often being used as a training area for dive courses and novice snorkelers. Together with volunteering biologists and students, we are presently observing a human impact on the reefs and its adjacent habitats of apparently substantial magnitude (illegal fishing, building and littering in the tidal zone, environmental unfriendly diving and snorkelling practises, reef walking, etc.).

PADI Open Water Diver (or similar) with at least 15 dives, students of marine science or related field are desireable but not restricted to. Certain measures (small projects) may require the PADI Advanced Open Water Course (or similar). Knowledge of marine biology is an advantage.

We offer Open Water Diver courses and training dives for uncertified divers.

3 weeks package for 800* € includes:

accommodation, airport shuttles, 25 project dives, training, one day trip to Nabq protectorate (mangroves & dunes)

*Price is excluding diving equipment!
