EU funded PhD studentship

Dear all,

I am looking for a suitable candidate for an EU funded PhD studentship in
my lab (Marie Curie International Training Network ARAMACC:

*Early stage researcher (ESR, 36 months PhD studentship) on trace element
incorporation into bivalve shells; ARAMACC*

The Department of Paleontology, Institute of Geosciences at the University
of Mainz (Germany) is pleased to announce a temporary job opening (three
years) for a highly motivated and highly qualified PhD student. The project
(ESR 4.2; deals with trace element
incorporation in bivalve shells and is embedded in a large EU project

We are looking for a candidate interested in developing novel environmental
proxies preserved in shells of bivalve mollusks (*Arctica* *islandica*,
*Glycymeris* spp., *Pecten* spp., *Astarte* spp.) from the North Atlantic.
You will be working on the potential of trace elements (e.g., strontium,
magnesium) preserved in the shell material to be used as proxies for past
environmental conditions. By carrying out controlled growth experiments in
the lab and field, you will study ways of distinguishing between the roles
of so-called vital effects and of environmental influences in the
incorporation of trace elements into carbonate shell material. During the
experiments you will closely monitor the biochemical processes of shell
formation, including the properties of the water (chemical composition and
particulate organic matter), of the extrapallial fluids at the site of
shell formation, and of the shell itself (carbonate, organic matrices etc).
You will also calibrate the potential proxies against measured
environmental data.

As part of the ARAMACC training program, you will join the other nine ESRs
in one research cruise, three summer schools and two workshops delivered by
ARAMACC partners, all designed to provide expert training in a wide range
of generic and specific skills. You will also enroll in the established
doctoral studies program at the University of Mainz, and you will have the
option of spending time on secondment with other ARAMACC partners.


- MSc or diploma preferably in Geosciences, Biology, Oceanography,
Fisheries or Environmental Sciences

- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)

- Positive attitude toward field and laboratory work

- Ability to organize and prioritize own work and organize
research within the project schedule

- Computer literacy, analytical skills, statistical skills, and
effective team working

- Previous international experience highly desirable

*ARAMACC* ("Annually Resolved Archives of Marine Climate Change"; is an EU-funded international collaboration whose scientific
goal is to use the shells of very long-lived mollusks as a record of
environmental change in the northeast Atlantic Ocean over the past thousand
years. The research is based on the relatively recent discovery that the
annual banding in the shells of some marine mollusks can be used to develop
long timelines, or chronologies, of shell material using methods identical
to those used in tree-ring research. The scientific field that has
developed out of this discovery is called "sclerochronology" (or
"shell-ring research"). The idea behind ARAMACC science is to develop a
network of these shell-based chronologies in the northeast Atlantic Ocean,
and at the same time to advance the applications of this kind of research
in the fields of biology, climate modeling, proxy development and
environmental monitoring.

From the point of view of the relatively new science of sclerochronology,
ARAMACC presents a great opportunity to move the field forward with an
injection of new blood and new ideas.
