2 PhD positions in sub-projects B2 (Biological Oceanography)
The departments of Marine Biogeochemistry and Marine Ecology of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences IFM-GEOMAR, Kiel Germany are offering
2 PhD positions
to participate in the newly established SFB 754 entitled ‘Climate-marine biogeochemistry interaction in the tropical ocean’ (http://www.sfb754.de ).
The two positions are associated with subproject B2 entitled ‘Pelagic Community Responses to Changes in Nutrient Stoichiometry’ The project will use a combination of manipulative experiments and field surveys to quantitatively assess responses of the plankton community to oxygen-related changes in nutrient stoichiometry.
Position B2-1 (supervised by Prof. U. Riebesell): The successful candidate will investigate the impacts of changes in nutrient stoichiometry on phytoplankton productivity, nutrient utilization, and elemental composition. This work will be based on a combination of field surveys, on-board mesocosm experiments and laboratory-based culture work. Experience in pelagic biogeochemistry is desirable.
Position B2-2 (supervised by Prof. U. Sommer): The successful candidate will investigate the transmission of stoichiometry-driven phytoplankton changes to zooplankton growth and nutrient recycling. This work will be based on a combination of field surveys, on-board mesocosm experiments and laboratory-based culture work. Experience in the experimental handling and taxonomy of marine zooplankton is required.
The PhD students are expected to collaborate closely within B2 and with other subprojects of the SFB and to participate in research cruises to the tropical North Atlantic and tropical South Pacific (first cruise scheduled for December/January 2008). The positions are available for 3 years, starting 1st July 2008. The salary will be according to the German E13/2 TV-L pay scale.
The CAU Kiel and the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences IFM-GEOMAR seek to increase the proportion of female scientists and therefore women are especially encouraged to apply. CAU and IFM-GEOMAR also support the employment of disabled persons. Persons with disabilities will, with appropriate qualifications and aptitudes, be employed preferentially.
Applications with the usual documents quoting "SFB754 PhD-index number" should be sent before May 30 preferably via e-mail to
